Comparison of male reproductive parameters in mice with type 1 and type 2 diabetes

Abstract: Objective: The differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T1DM and T2DM) in terms of their adverse effects on male reproductive parameters have never been elucidated. This study aimed to distinguish between the effects of the DM types in mice treated with multiple low doses of streptozotocin (STZ) to mimic human T1DM and coadministered a high-fat diet (HFD) to mimic human T2DM.Methods: The T1DM mice were intraperitoneally injected with STZ (40 mg/kg body weight) for 5 days. The T2DM mice received… Show more

“…It is possible that DSF can stimulate insulin production declining of metabolic rates. Indeed, several investigations have also demonstrated the significant decrease of male reproductive organ weights in T2DM rats (Sampannang et al, 2019(Sampannang et al, , 2020Yannasithinon & Iamsaard, 2019). Similar to many studies, we also demonstrated detrimental effect of DM on sperm parameters (La Vignera et al, 2012;Liu et al, 2013;Maremanda et al, 2020;Sampannang et al, 2020).…”

Herein, DSF could improve reproductive organ weights by increasing of diameter and height of seminiferous tubules, tunica albuginea thickness and epididymal sperm density.…”

“…Studies with animal models of STZ-induced diabetes have shown that both type 1 and type 2 DZ alter male fertility by modifying sperm specific parameters (sperm motility, sperm DNA integrity and sperm morphology) [ 18 , 19 ]. These changes may occur as a result of impaired spermatogenesis, but also due to inhibition of intracellular glucose transport as a result of insulin deficiency.…”
