“…Mussels deposit distinctive external rings in their shells as they age, similar to annual growth rings in trees. Though external ring counts can be biased by environmental and other disturbances, and do not provide age estimates as accurate as other methods, rings can be counted to give an estimation of age (Ford et al 2020, Haag and Commens-Carson 2008, Haag and Rypel 2011).…”

“…This species is a short‐term brooder, spawning and releasing glochidia from early spring to mid‐summer of the same year. Based on congeners ( Pleurobema cordatum (Ohio pigtoe) and Pleurobema rubrum (pyramid pigtoe)) and field observations, it probably reaches sexual maturity between the ages 4 and 12 years, has low to moderate fecundity (20,000–50,000) and is long‐lived, potentially up to 40 years (Haag & Staton, 2003; Watters, Hoggarth & Stansberry, 2009; Inoue et al, 2018; Ford, Plants‐Paris & Ford, 2020).…”

“…Von Bertalanffy mathematical model has been applied widely to plot growth for numerous biota (Lee et al, 2020), such as in fishes (Ogle and Isermann, 2017;Du Pontavice et al, 2018;Harris et al, 2018;Vahabnezhad et al, 2020;Wang et al, 2021), mollusks (López-Rocha et al, 2018;Ford et al, 2020;Prato et al, 2020) , sea turtle (Ramirez et al, 2021), and poultry (Mata-Estrada et al, 2020;Del Norte-Campos et al, 2021). It even started to be attempted in several study areas (Fernandes et al, 2020), including Covid-19 outbreak (Brahma et al, 2021).…”
