Comparison of long‐term results of transurethral incision of the prostate with transurethral resection of the prostate, in patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy

Abstract: One hundred patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) were randomized to transurethral incision (TUIP) or transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). The average prostate weight before operation was not more than 30.0 g. Indications for the operations were based on the disease history, physical examination, digital rectal examination, laboratory values, and pressure-flow examination. All operations were performed with patients under spinal anesthesia. TUIP was performed with a Collins knife, and TUR… Show more

“…Only one study 186 reported quality of life of patients following surgery using the IPSS QoL (0-6) questionnaire. At 2 years, quality of life appeared to be marginally higher for those patients who underwent TURP (Appendix 9.5, comparison 05:08:01: WMD 0.20, 95% CI 0.01-0.39, p = 0.04).…”

“…In a larger study of 220 divided equally to TURP or TUIP reported two patients who developed incontinence following TUIP (1.8 %) and four patients who developed incontinence following TURP (3.6 %) [ 14 ]. Furthermore, more contemporary studies such as Tkozc & Prasjner reported no new SUI for 100 patients randomized to either TURP or TUIP, which may be refl ective of improvements in optical technology and further experience with the procedure [ 15 ].…”
