Comparison of lacustrine successions and their palaeohydrological implications in two sub‐basins of the Triassic Cuyana rift, Argentina

Abstract: Continental carbonates are rich in palaeoclimatic, palaeoenvironmental and palaeontological information. While carbonate accumulation mechanisms have been described for many types of continental environments, especially in extensional basins, there are still uncertainties that existing facies models fail to address. The Triassic Cerro de las Cabras and Cerro Puntudo formations are alluvial-fluvial-lacustrine sequences that represent a part of the sedimentary infill of two sub-basins of the Cuyana Basin during … Show more

“…Deposited through suspension fallout in relatively shallow stagnant waterbodies, and subsequently altered by pedogenic activities (Benavente et al, 2015;Reineck & Singh, 1980). Peat (P) 1 -1.8 m thick, laterally persistent, deposits of dark greyish to deep brownish peat, containing traces of roots, rootlets, rhizomes, tiny stems, and leaves ( Figure 5d).…”

“…Benavente et al . () described in detail the middle part of the Cerro de Las Cabras Formation at its type locality, composed mainly of carbonates associated with volcaniclastic deposits. They interpreted that section of the unit as being a freshwater carbonate shallow palustrine–lacustrine depositional systems fed mainly by an open groundwater supply, as confirmed by geochemical data (Benavente ).…”
