“…Differences in blood sampling methods and their effect on laboratory results have been analyzed repeatedly in the human medical literature. Specifically, sampling via direct venipuncture versus from a peripheral venous catheter has been found to have no effect on the accuracy of coagulation profiles 1 or electrolyte results, 2,3 and causes minimal hemolysis in samples drawn from large bore catheters 4 . These finding were consistent even after fluid administration through the sampled IVC 5 .…”

“…Several studies have analysed the concordance between the laboratory values obtained using DVP and PVC, most using PVCs fitted with saline syringes 6 7. However, their equivalence has been little studied, sometimes with inadequate methodology, by contrasting means testing or the correlation coefficient,19 and at other times using a small sample size 20 21…”

“…Collection using DVP was made from the limb opposite to the one with the PVC. For PVC collection, the intravenous fluid therapy line was first closed for 15 s, as was any medication with the PVC three-way valve, and a syringe was adapted, from which 4 mL of blood was discarded, as recommended in recent studies 6 7. Thereafter, the syringe was changed by rotating the valve 1/8 to complete removal.…”

“…The study selection process resulted in 855 studies being identified from the search strategy (Figure ). Based on comparing the title and abstract of the citation against the inclusion criteria, 16 studies were identified as eligible (Barnard et al, ; Corbo, Fu, Silver, Atallah, & Bijur, ; Dietrich, ; Grant, ; Hambleton, Gomez, & Bernabeu Andreu, ; Himberger & Himberger, ; Kelly & Klim, ; Lowe et al, ; Munnix, Schellart, Gorissen, & Kleinveld, ; Ong, Chan, & Lim, ; Ortells‐Abuye, Busquets‐Puigdevall, Díaz‐Bergara, Paguina‐Marcos, & Sánchez‐Pérez, ; Phelan et al, ; Seemann & Reinhardt, ; Self et al, ; Wollowitz, Bijur, Esses, & Gallagher, ; Zlotowski, Kupas, & Wood, ).…”
