Comparison of Laboratory and “On-Court” Endurance Testing in Tennis

Abstract: Treadmill testing (TT) commonly used in endurance testing is often not sport-specific. Therefore a field test (FT) for tennis players was developed. The purpose was 1) to compare metabolic and cardiorespiratory response between TT and FT and 2) to assess tennis stroke ratings during FT. In both tests ventilatory variables (VO2, VE, VT, Bf, VE x VO2(-1)), heart rate (HR), and lactate (LA) were measured. For both tests an "individual anaerobic threshold" (IAT) was calculated. The comparison of TT and FT yielded … Show more

“…to the NAVTEN and Smekal's protocol (29 It would certainly be interesting to compare these four tennis specific tests either with direct VO 2 measures to see if they all solicit the aerobic metabolism to its maximum or to the same extend or solely with the performance score to know their equivalences.…”

“…Söğüt et al (28) determined that the mean body weight of tennis players in the junior category A was 42 kg whereas it was 38 kg for players in category C. According to a study conducted by Smekal et al (27), mean body weight of male tennis players was found to be 73 kg. Bahamonde et al (1) found that the mean body weight of male college tennis players was 77 kg.…”
