Comparison of Ki-67 proliferative index between eutopic and ectopic endometrium: A case control study

Abstract: Endometriosis shows some characteristics of tumors such as high rate of invasion, getting autonomy, and proliferation as the disease progresses with subsequent damage to target organs. When the stage of the disease increases, environment becomes more suitable for increased proliferation and invasion. In this study, the increase in proliferative activity as the severity increases is shown by the increase in Ki-67 index. As more studies are being conducted in this field, pathogenesis will be clarified, which cou… Show more

“…Chronic and progressive inflammation is able to form invasive mass, such as a massive endometriotic cyst in this case. 8,15 This study also shows a significant association between Ki-67 expression and endometriosis stage. Statistical analysis with Somers'd test results in p value of <0.0001 (p<0.05) and correlation coefficient of 0.564, reflecting a significantly strong correlation based on Guilford criteria.…”

“…There is a positive correlation between endometriosis stage and Ki-67 expression, this explains the importance of proliferation in progressivity of the disease. 15,16 In more advanced stage of disease, according to AFS score, there would be deeper endometriotic lesions, more adhesion, and obliteration in cavum douglasi. Consistent with the etiopathogenesis of endometriosis, as endometrial cells reach the implantation sites outside uterine cavity by menstrual blood retrograde, lymphogenic, or hematogenic, these cells would adhere and invade ovary or peritoneal structures.…”

“…However, contrary to the study by Kahyaoglu et al [16], no correlation was observed between postoperative CA125 levels and the Ki-67 proliferation index (p=0.731). The increase in the Ki-67 proliferation index was also related to a more advanced stage of the disease.…”

“…Kahyaoglu et al [16] compared the Ki67 proliferation index in eutopic and ectopic endometrium and found an increase in the proliferation index as the endometriosis stage increased, in a study of 38 patients with endometriosis and 21 with control group. Furthermore, a correlation between the proliferation index and CA125 levels existed.…”
