Characterization of raffia palm fiber for use in polymer composites

Raffia palm fibers are potential reinforcement materials for making cost-effective polymer-based composite. This paper presents the results obtained from a study of physical, chemical, thermal and mechanical properties of raffia palm fibers (RPFs) derived from the raffia palm tree (Raphia farinifera). The as-received RPFs had their remnant binders manually removed and was subsequently cleaned in a 2% detergent solution before drying in an air oven at 70 °C for 24 h. Evaluation of the properties of the dried samples was carried out using a combination of characterization techniques including chemical composition determination, density measurement, moisture adsorption and water absorption measurements, tensile testing, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectromicroscopy. The main constituents of RPFs were found to be cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The average diameter and average density were 1.53 ± 0.29 mm and 1.50 ± 0.01 g/cm 3 , respectively. The average breaking strength of the fibers ranged from 152 ± 22 to 270 ± 39 MPa; it did not vary significantly with fiber length and cross-head speed during tensile testing. The results of scanning electron microscopic investigation of the fibers showed that they comprise several elemental fibers which are tightly packed together with each having its own lumen. Synchrotron-based Fourier-transform infrared spectromicroscopy of a cross-section of the fiber showed that lignin is concentrated mostly on the outside while cellulose and pectin are concentrated in the mid-section. A two-stage water sorption behavior was observed for the fibers.

Ligno-cellulosic natural fiber like Banana can be acclimated to manufacture hybrid or union fabric with mostly used jute fiber which can get colossal popularity as a wearable product because of the health and hygiene issues. Banana fibers, extracted from the sheath, can be utilized for manufacturing fiber, can diminish the pressure on the jute fiber. It will be very frugal, and ineluctably it will be a great opportunity to blend it with the other natural fiber. In this study, a Jute-Banana hybrid fabric (JBHF) was developed by using Jute yarn (12 Ne, in warp) and Banana yarn (18 Ne, in weft). In order to evaluate physico-mechanical properties of naturally dyed Jute-Banana hybrid fabric, different tests like Stiffness, Thickness, Tensile strength, Tear strength, Drape and Crease recovery were conducted which provided satisfactory results. Colorfastness to wash, water, rubbing and perspiration of naturally dyed Jute-Banana hybrid fabrics (JBHF) also provided acceptable outcomes. FTIR test also provided the confirmation of this two fibers and Spectrophotometer was used to illustrate the dyeing quality. It was an endeavor to minimize the dependency on a single quality fiber and find an alternative way to prepare the hybrid fabric by blending two different quality natural fibers.

Natural fibres will take a major role in the emerging "green" economy based on energy efficiency, the use of renewable materials in polymer products, industrial processes that reduce carbon emissions and recyclable materials that minimize waste. Natural fibres are a kind of renewable resources, which have been renewed by nature and human ingenuity for thousands of years. They are also carbon neutral; they absorb the equal amount of carbon dioxide they produce. These fibers are completely renewable, environmental friendly, high specific strength, non-abrasive, low cost, and bio-degradability. Due to these characteristics, natural fibers have recently become attractive to researchers and scientists as an alternative method for fibers reinforced composites. This review paper summarized the history of natural fibers and its applications. Also, this paper focused on different properties of natural fibers (such as hemp, jute, bamboo and sisal) and its applications which were used to substitute glass fiber.
