Comparison of Intravenous Terbutaline Versus Normal Saline in Pediatric Patients on Continuous High-Dose Nebulized Albuterol for Status Asthmaticus

Abstract: No outcome measures demonstrated statistical significance. Outcome measures revealed a trend toward improvement in the terbutaline group. Before recommending routine use of intravenous terbutaline for acute severe asthma, further study to determine safety and efficacy is necessary.

“…The primary outcome measure was ICU length of stay. There was a trend toward a shorter length of stay for the terbutaline group, but the difference did not reach statistical significance [72].…”

“…Established cardiac complications associated with acute asthma treatment in children include supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and acute coronary ischaemia [1,2]. More recently, two groups have reported elevated cardiac troponin I (CTnI) levels in children treated for acute asthma [3,4]. In this case series, the raised levels of CTnI were not generally accompanied by overt symptoms or signs of coronary ischaemia.…”
