Comparison of International Caries Detection and Assessment System and digital radiographs for detecting occlusal dental caries: An In vivo Study

Abstract: Dental caries is a dynamic microbial disease that presents a challenge to a dentist in the initial diagnosis. Prime importance should be given to early caries detection as prior diagnosis helps in early prevention. [1] There are various methods for caries detection which include visual, visuotactile, radiographic, fluorescence-based, and electrical conductance-based methods. [2] More often, a dental clinician uses visuotactile and radiographic methods for caries detection in daily practice. Among visuotactile … Show more

“…The radiographic examination is considered to be inaccurate in detecting early enamel lesions, however, some studies reported that radiographs might add information to the visual examination about caries progress 2,22,23 , including hidden caries 24 . Bhumireddy et al indicated that ICDAS II showed better accuracy than digital radiographs in the diagnosis of caries within the enamel, and both tools were equally effective in the detection of dentinal lesions 25 . The results of our study showed that the visual method showed the highest correlation to the gold standard followed by Fluorescent DIAGNOdent Pen differentiates the sound surfaces from carious lesions according to fluorescence difference.…”
