Comparison of indapamide and hydrochlorothiazide plus amiloride as a third drug in the treatment of arterial hypertension

Abstract: In a randomized, double-blind crossover trial, indapamide (IND) 2.5 mg and hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg + amiloride 2.5 mg (HCTZ + A) were found to be equally effective in reducing blood pressure (BP) in 13 patients with moderate to severe hypertension already receiving chronic treatment with a beta blocker and a vasodilatator (supine BP during run-in: 169/103 +/- 21/5 mmHg; on IND: 149/91 +/- 21/14 mmHg; on HCTZ + A 144/88 +/- 23/5 mmHg). Both drugs induced insignificant reductions in body weight, and no change … Show more

“…The decrease in potassium attributable to the hydrochlorothiazide + amiloride treatments was non-trivial – equivalent to 0.46 bSD, while mean potassium levels were increased by 0.19 bSD in the atenolol group. The changes in serum potassium in hydrochlorothiazide + amiloride group were in line with findings from previous studies [33, 34]. Potassium-sparing diuretics, despite not fully - are known to correct the fall in serum potassium by increasing serum potassium concentrations [35].…”

“…Poulsen et al ve dvojitě zaslepené RCT porovnával indapamid (2,5 mg/den) a HCTZ (25 mg/den) v kombinaci s amiloridem (2,5 mg/den) u 13 hypertoniků. V případě indapamidu byl zaznamenán výraznější pokles kal emie; hyperurikemie byla v obou ramenech studie srovnatelně častá [17].…”
