Comparison of human pulp tissue dissolution capacities of different irrigating solutions: An in vitro study

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate of the tissue dissolution capability of 3% of sodium hypochlorite, 5%pomegranate, and 5% miswak.Methods: 45 freshly extracted premolar teeth were used. The teeth were grouped into three groups (n=15) Group I: The pulp tissue was immersed in 3% sodium hypochlorite irrigating solution. Group II: The pulp tissue were immersed in Punicagranatum (5%pomegranate) Nano particles irrigating solution. Group III: The pulp tissue were immersed in Salvadorapersica (5%miswak) Nano particles irrigating solution.The pulp tissue obtained was inserted into a small plastic test tube and 10ml of the irrigating solution were added to it and stored for 15 min. The ultrasonic tip were inserted inside the tube with irrigating solution and allowed to work for 1 minute to achieve proper agitation. After 15 min the solution was filtered through absorbing filter paper for 3 min to remove any excess moisture and left the sample to dry. Then the weight of the residual pulp tissue was measured and the difference between the initial and final weight was used to calculate the weight loss that were represent the dissolving power of each solution.Results: The highest value of dissolution percentage was found in Sodium hypochlorite group (98%), followed by Pomegranate group (78.3%). while the least value was found in Miswak group (66.8%). p= ≤0.001. Conclusion:On contrary of miswak, Pomegranate gives promising results in relation to NaOCl in terms of tissue dissolving capacity.

Peracetic acid (PAA) is widely used as a sterilizing/disinfecting agent, and, in endodontics, it has been introduced as a promising irrigant in root canal treatment. It has been used at different concentrations to achieve various functions. However, endodontic instruments in contact with PAA of a certain concentration may affect their fatigue resistance. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of PAA on the cyclic fatigue resistance of three commercial heat-treated nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary files. Three types of heat-treated NiTi rotary files were selected: One Curve (OC), ProTaper Gold (PTG), and Wave One Gold (WOG). Each type was divided into three subgroups (n = 6 for each file type): (1) untreated instruments; (2) files immersed in 0.002% PAA; and (3) files immersed in 0.35% PAA. The performance of each file type was tested in a simulated canal. The number of cycles to fracture (NCF) was determined to assess cyclic fatigue resistance of the files. Independent sample t-test was applied to compare each treated file within a subgroup with its respective control group, and one-way ANOVA was used for comparison among the main groups. All types of tested files revealed a significant decline in the cyclic fatigue resistance after exposure to 0.002% PAA except the PTG ( P = 0.209 ). After exposure of the files to a higher concentration (0.35% PAA), a dramatic reduction was demonstrated by all the groups. Before and after exposure of the files to PAA, PTG displayed the highest cyclic fatigue resistance, followed by the WOG, while the OC showed the lowest resistance. Exposure of heated-treated NiTi files to PAA in a relatively high or low concentration adversely affects the cyclic fatigue resistance. The PTG files demonstrated the best performance among the tested types and can be disinfected with 0.002% PAA for clinical purpose.

Determine the efficacy of 5 % chlorine dioxide as an endodontic irrigant for pulp dissolution. Thirty five samples of human dental pulp were obtained, previously weighed and immersed in three solutions= 5 % ClO 2 , 5.25 % NaOCl and saline (control group), for 10 minutes at 32 ºC; they were dried and reweighed. Then the weight loss was compared to the original weight and analyzed statistically. 5.25 % NaOCl and 5 % ClO 2 dissolved the dental pulp samples more effectively than saline (p> 0.001). No statistically significant difference was found between the tissue dissolving properties of 5.25 % NaOCl and 5 % ClO 2 (p=0.893). 5 % ClO 2 is effective in dissolving human dental pulp tissue.
