Comparison of Helmert and rigorous orthometric heights over Japan

Abstract: The local vertical datum in Japan is based on the Helmert's approximation of mean gravity along the plumbline. However, determination of a rigorous orthometric height requires that the integral-mean value of gravity along the plumbline between the geoid and the Earth surface has to be known precisely. An attempt has been made to obtain rigorous orthometric heights at 816 GPS/levelling points distributed over four main islands of Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu) by applying corrections to the Helmer… Show more

“…3c) because most GPS/levelling data have low elevations (<1000 m) even in mountainous areas like central Honshu (e.g. Odera and Fukuda 2015). It is also noted that GOCE GGMs perform relatively better in Kyushu (considering the magnitude of standard deviation) than other regions over Japan (Figs.…”

“…(10) In addition, several studies to determine the rigorous orthometric heights and the practical possibility of replacing the use of Helmert orthometric heights with normal orthometric heights were carried out. (11)(12)(13) In Korea, a precision calculation of orthometric height by orthometric correction was performed mainly through leveling and gravity surveying data measured at national control points. (14,15) Various orthometric corrections were calculated in mountainous areas by using the existing gravity data or actual measured gravity data, and then the orthometric height was determined.…”

“…En términos prácticos, para trabajos de ingeniería, se considera el nivel medio del mar como una superficie equivalente al geoide. Por ende, a la altura nivelada y la altura ortométrica respectivamente se las puede considerar de la misma forma (Odera & Fukuda, 2015). La determinación de alturas sobre el nivel medio del mar (niveladas) es llevada a cabo a través de campañas de nivelación geométrica que recorren las vías estatales del país y que constituyen la RCBV (Figura 1).…”
