Comparison of giant dipole resonance decay in stiffMo92and softMo

Abstract: Gamma-ray spectra from the decay of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) built on excited states of Mo and Mo nuclei at average spins(9-24)h and temperatures of 1.35 -1.50 MeV were measured, and the parameters of a two-component GDR strength function were extracted. Deformations determined from the fitted component energies are substantially larger than predicted by the rotating liquid drop model, suggesting large thermal shape fluctuations. Widths of the GDR in Mo increase from 7.6+0.1 to 8.6+0.2 MeV in the spin… Show more

“…a spin of ( Jf ) = 18. 2A' implies a deformation of AR/R -0.156, and since hR/R -hE/Eo we therefore infer a broadening of AE =2.65 -2 8. MeV for the present range of spins in ' F+ Al, which is comparable to the width increase shown in…”

“…The relevant reaction parameters are listed in Table I. The GDR p strength is based on one classical dipole sum rule, in agreement with presently known experimental data [24]. The remaining input is the same as in prior work [4 -6, 10].…”

“…If absolute values in the high-energy region are compared, the fit is often normalized to the data in an energy region of 3-7 MeV (see, e.g., [47]), far below the peak of the GDR. Statistical uncertainties are usually determined in the normal fashion by varying GDR parameters until the quality of the fit deteriorates.…”
