Comparison of genetic characteristics and pathogenicity of Lactococcus garvieae isolated from aquatic animals in Taiwan

Abstract: Seventy-six Taiwanese bacterial isolates including 74 from diseased, cultured, aquatic animals (54 grey mullet Mugil cephalus, 3 basket mullet Chelon alatus, 2 tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, 1 grouper Epinephelus coioides, 2 yellowfin seabream Acanthopagrus latus, 1 Borneo mullet Chelon macrolepis, 1 bullfrog Rana catesbeiana, 1 Japanese eel Anguilla japonica, and 9 giant freshwater prawns Macrobrachium rosenbergii), 1 wild-caught seafood species (squid muscle collected from a restaurant) and 1 human isolate (… Show more

“…Different species of Pseudomonas and Aeromonas, and presumptive Cytophaga-like strains were also detected. Furthermore, gram-positive bacteria were also detected such as Bacillus and Staphylococcus (Hanlon and Forsythe 1990;Farto et al 2003;Tsai et al 2012;Fichi et al 2015). However, only V. alginolyticus or V. lentus have been confirmed with ability to cause lesions in octopus (Hanlon and Forsythe 1990;Farto et al 2003).…”

“…However, foodborne transmission of L. garvieae from aquatic products is mostly deduced from patients' clinical histories and isolates are often not further characterised on a molecular level. Thus far, only 2 reports confirming the association between a clinical case of L. garvieae infection and ingestion of raw seafood have been published (Wang et al 2007, Tsai et al 2012. The possibility exists that strains of piscine origin are responsible for human infections, but the data available to support this claim is insufficient.…”

“…For example, the presence of GAPDH at the surface of different pathogenic streptococci plays an important role in their virulence, promoting bacterial invasion of host cells and modulating host immune system response (Terao et al 2006;Madureira et al 2007;Oliveira et al 2012). In L. garvieae, this enzyme generally appears as a strongly immunogenic protein and can induce a protective immune response in fish (Shin et al 2007(Shin et al , 2009Tsai et al 2012).…”
