Comparison Of Full-Mouth Scaling and Quadrant-Wise Scaling in the Treatment of Adult Chronic Periodontitis

Abstract: In the search for the ideal treatment of periodontal disease various non-surgical techniques should be considered. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of full-mouth scaling (FMS) by clinical and microbiological parameters. 670 individuals were evaluated with 230 subjects meeting the selection criteria and were divided into two groups; 115 subjects treated with FMS and 115 treated with weekly sessions of scaling and root planning (SRP). The patient population had a mean age of 51.67 years, … Show more

“…The fact that the study included smokers may constitute a disruptive factor [10]. The obtained reduction in the clinical parameters confirms the necessity of conducting nonsurgical treatment, especially in terms of reducing periodontal pocket depth and the location of connective tissue attachment, and confirms the gold-standard status of the scaling and root planning procedure in periodontal treatment [11][12][13]. Mechanical cleaning is necessary in order to improve clinical parameters, and the applied preparations can only support and consolidate the treatment results [14,15].…”

“…A later report indicated that this full-mouth treatment approach resulted in superior clinical outcomes and microbiological e ects than conventional quadrant SRP (control), regardless of the adjunctive use of chlorhexidine . However, morerecent studies from other research centres have not been able to demonstrate an advantage of full-mouth scaling (FMS) within 24 hours over the control regimen (Afacan 2020;Apatzidou 2004;Babaloo 2018;Del Peloso 2008;Fonseca 2015;Graziani 2015;Jervøe-Storm 2006;Koshy 2005;Loggner Gra 2009;Pontillo 2018;Predin 2014;Roman-Torres 2018;Santuchi 2015;Soares 2015;Swierkot 2009;Wennström 2005;Zanatta 2006;Zijnge 2010).…”

“…In the present (second) update, we reconsidered these studies and determined that one should be excluded (Knöfler 2007). We included nine new studies from the updated searches (Afacan 2020;Babaloo 2018;Fonseca 2015;Graziani 2015;Pontillo 2018;Predin 2014;Roman-Torres 2018;Santuchi 2015;Soares 2015).…”

“…SRP, more recently renamed as subgingival instrumentation (SI) (by The EFP S3 level Clinical Practice Guideline (European Federation of Periodontology)) [ 14 ], is considered to be the gold standard in the nonsurgical treatment of periodontitis [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ]. Several factors may influence its effectiveness and success, including the presence of deep periodontal pockets [ 20 , 21 ] and furcation damage [ 22 , 23 , 24 ].…”
