Comparison of four Fitbit and Jawbone activity monitors with a research-grade ActiGraph accelerometer for estimating physical activity and energy expenditure

Abstract: Consumer monitors had similar accuracy for PA assessment as the ActiGraph, which suggests that consumer monitors may serve to track personal PA behaviours and EE. However, due to discrepancies among monitors, individuals should be cautious when comparing relative and absolute differences in PA values obtained using different monitors.

“…Hereby, the very low activity levels found in this cohort was consistent with earlier findings [10,18,[29][30][31], although the absolute values were higher in this study caused by the recently adapted threshold [20]. e need for these adjusted algorithms and appropriate tracker devices is in accordance with studies, showing distinctive validity for different wearables and intensities [32,33]. e clinical improvement observed between operation and discharge could be documented with a similar quality as the usually applied indices for quality of life (EQ5D) and functional independence (Barthel-20), which are regarded as the current gold standard [34].…”

“…One potential confounder includes the wrist versus waist location of the monitoring devices during data collection, although this arrangement is consistent with that of similar studies that compared data from these devices (2)(3)(4)10,(13)(14)(15)(16). The study could not control for wear time of the consumer devices, and this might have impacted results.…”

“…In acute studies, subject also wore a custom-designed primate jacket (Lomir, Quebec, Canada) that protected the port and housed a commercially available 3-way accelerometer (FitBit Zip, FitBit, San Francisco, CA). The accelerometer has been shown to produce reliable activity data in human studies and was used here to measure daily activity counts (Imboden et al, 2017). During daily experimental sessions, the subject sat in a standard primate chair (Primate Products, Immokalee, FL or PLAS Lab Model 515-SASR, Lansing.…”
