Comparison of fatigue life behavior between deep groove radial ball bearings possessing conventional and micro-grooved outer races operating under dry condition

Abstract: A comparative study on fatigue life of deep groove radial ball bearings possessing conventional and micro-grooved outer races by experimental investigation is discussed in this paper. This research has been carried out to explore and understand the fatigue life of a micro-grooved ball bearing (MGB) with a circumferential micro-groove on outer race by conducting long duration tests under dry condition (i.e. wiping out the applied grease from the races by using tissue paper and lint free cloth) and compare the r… Show more

“…Friction torque is an important index to predict bearing life (Jin et al, 2021;Sun et al, 2023); in recent decades, a series of studies have been carried out on the test of bearing friction torque. For example, Gouda et al (2023aGouda et al ( , 2023bGouda et al ( , 2022 proposed a ball roller bearing with microgroove, built a test instrument for the ball roller bearing and compared the proposed bearing with conventional bearing with the test instrument. Under different lubricants, rotational speeds and radial pressures, the friction torque, vibration, temperature rise and surface damage of the bearings were tested.…”

“…In recent years, many researchers have conducted in-depth studies on the wear mechanisms and characteristics of rolling bearings with surface textures. Gouda et al (2023a;2023b; investigated the fatigue life and frictional dynamic performance of deep groove radial ball bearings with conventional and micro-grooved outer rings under dry friction and various grades of lubricating grease conditions. The results indicate that bearings with grooves exhibit slower fatigue failure, with reductions in vibration and friction torque ranging from 14% to 41% and 15% to 30%, respectively.…”
