Comparison of external and endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy

Abstract: Satisfactorily completed questionnaires were received from 64 out of 90 patients in the external group and from 30 of 41 patients in the endonasal group. Results indicated positive scores for both groups for all four subscales of the Glasgow benefit inventory. There were no statistically significant differences between results for the external and endonasal procedures. The ocular symptomatology questionnaire results indicated better scores for the external procedure, but this difference did not reach statistic… Show more

“…The GBI has been used in a wide variety of ORL procedures, including rhinoplasty, 17 acoustic neuroma surgery, 18 endoscopic sinus surgery, 12 and EE-DCR. 1 Ho et al 19 used the GBI questionnaire in a prospective study of 55 patients undergoing EE-DCR. The patients were reviewed at 6 months by a consultant ophthalmologist and graded as a success if the symptoms were either cured or better.…”

“…[10][11][12][13][14] ED DCR a good option for the treatment of primary nasolacrimal duct obstruction but it is also considered an acceptable procedure for the treatment of failure of EX DCR. 15 The advantages of ED DCR with respect to EX DCR include less interference on the lacrimal pump mechanism and the possibility to treat sino-nasal disorders and anatomical abnormalities in the same operation in the present series, we performed 14 ancillary procedures (5 septoplasty, 7 middle turbinoplasty, and 2 middle meatal antrostomies) that would not have been possible if an EX DCR had been performed.…”

“…19 Some investigators define success by observation of fluorescein in the nose or ability to irrigate the lacrimal system, while others use questionnaires, both previously validated ones, such as the Glasgow benefit inventory questionnaire, and those created by researchers to ascertain patient symptoms. [20][21][22] This lack of a universal definition of success makes evaluation and application of the many DCR study results challenging. As the goal of DCR is to improve patient quality of life and decrease recurrent infections, in our study, success was defined by symptomatology, as delineated by rates of redeveloping tearing or dacryocystitis.…”
