Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been increasingly recognised as a public health issue. The estimated worldwide prevalence of CKD is 8%-16% [1]. CKD was the 16th leading cause of death in 2016 and is expected to be the fifth leading cause by 2040 [2]. In Vietnam, the prevalence of CKD and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) has been continuously increasing, reaching nearly 90,000 patients with ESRD annually. Up to 9000 incident cases are underdiagnosed and undertreated every year. By the end of 2016, only approximately 21,000 patients underwent haemodialysis (HD), peritoneal dialysis (PD) or renal transplantation [3]. Patients with ESRD not only experience a decrease in life expectancy but also bear the burden of illness with various comorbidities. Moreover, prolonged treatment duration could consume substantial healthcare resources for management and further deteriorate the patient's quality of life (QoL) and survival rates [4,5].

Few studies have shown the combined impact of sitting time and physical activity on quality of life in older people. This cross-sectional study, using data from the 2016–2018 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, examines the association between sitting time and physical activity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Korean adults aged ≥ 65 years. HRQoL was assessed using the EuroQol-5 Dimension (EQ-5D, three-level version). We divided subjects into groups based on sitting time and physical activity and analyzed the combined association of sitting time and physical activity with HRQoL. The association between longer sitting time (≥8 h) and HRQoL was analyzed using multiple logistic regression. In total, 4276 participants were included. Prolonged sitting time was associated with all of the EQ-5D dimensions: mobility (odds ratio [OR]: 1.43, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.22–1.68), self-care (OR: 1.65 [95% CI 1.25–2.17]), usual activities (OR: 2.07 [95% CI 1.69–2.52]), pain/discomfort (OR: 1.57 [95% CI 1.34–1.84]), and anxiety/depression (OR: 1.49 [95% CI 1.17–1.91]). The prolonged sitting time/inactive group had higher ORs for all the EQ-5D dimensions than the low sitting time/active group. Prolonged sitting time was associated with low HRQoL in elderly Korean adults; physical activity could weaken the negative influence of prolonged sitting time on HRQoL.

“…Although HRQoL among HD patients has been investigated at earlier time in Jordan [ 18 , 29 ], the current study is the first one to use the EQ-5D-5L to explore HRQoL among HD patients in Jordan. The latter instrument is simple, easy to be completed, well recognized, requires shorter time to be finished, and has enhanced sensitiviy as compared with other available instruments for measuring HRQoL among patient population [ 13 , 30 ]. Objective This study examined health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and factors associated with poor HRQoL among hemodialysis (HD) patients. Methods A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted on HD patients with anemia in Jordan (n = 168). Validated questionnaires were utilized to collect data on HRQoL using EQ-5D-5L, psychiatric symptoms using Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and comorbidities score using the modified Charlson Comorbidity Index (mCCI). Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to identify the variables which are independently associated with HRQoL among patients. Results The mean (± SD) age of study participants was 52.2 (± 14.6) years. The mean utility value of EQ-5D-5L was 0.44 (± 0.42). Participants reported extreme problems mostly in pain/discomfort domain (19.6%). Increased age, increased mCCI and patient complains, more years under dialysis, decreased exercise, and low family income were significantly associated with poor HRQoL (p < 0.05). Conclusion The study findings revealed poor HRQoL among HD patients with anemia. Various dimensions of health were negatively affected among HD patients. Development and implementation of appropriate approaches with adequate education and psychosocial support to HD patients by healthcare professionals targeting improved HRQoL and clinical outcomes would be necessary.
