Comparison of Emissions and Efficiency of Two Types of Burners When Burning Wood Pellets from Different Suppliers

Abstract: Wood pellets play an important role among biomass materials used as fuel. At the same time, today’s economic, environmental, political and social realities, as well as other circumstances related to fuels used for heat generation, mean that there is demand for increasingly efficient and environmentally friendly combustion sources. As is well known, each combustion source has a different efficiency due to its intended use, design, principle of operation and the type and composition of the fuel burned. The amoun… Show more

“…While the length of Ebenopsis ebano pellets (17.37_1.61 mm) was longer than the Acacia wrightii (13.17_0.82 mm) and Havardia pallens (13.44_0.99.mm) pellets, the pellets of Ebenopsis ebano, Havardia pallens, and Acacia wrightii have length/diameter ratios of 2.88_0.27, 2.23_0.17, and 2.17_0.15, respectively. Another research conducted by [44] acknowledged that All of the pellets made from rice straw had a cylindrical shape with an average diameter of eight (8) mm and a length of ten (10) mm. A substance's Moisture content is identified as the most critical element influencing pellet quality [45].…”

“…Reducing the use of fossil fuels is a key challenge in the modern world. This is also important because it is estimated that by 2050, only about fourteen (14%) of proven oil reserves, seventy-two (72%) of proven coal reserves, and eighteen (18%) of proven gas reserves will remain [8]. The shortage of energy sources leads to price increases, a source of economic concerns, particularly in developing countries [9].…”

“…However, the obtained results can be considered comparable with the results of other works. Pelełka et al [56], during the combustion of wood pellets in a 200 kW boiler, recorded CO concentrations ranging from 78.5 to 201.2 mg•m −3 , NO x from 150 to 204 mg•m −3 and dust from 12.4 to 21.8 mg•m −3 . Air pollutant emissions from a 200 kW boiler were studied by Archan et al [57], and they obtained concentrations lower than the results of this study, ranging for CO from 12 to 60 mg•m −3 , for NO x from 84 to 119 mg•m −3 and for dust from 4 to 27 mg•m −3 .…”

“…They mostly replace older generation multi-fuel boilers, which are very inefficient, especially when burning wood logs. A low-cost and quick improvement in energy efficiency and ecological energy production can be achieved by modernizing old gratefired coal-fired boilers with the use of automatically dosing fuel-dosing burners powered by plant biofuels [44][45][46][47][48]. Pellets are mainly produced from the sawdust of coniferous or deciduous trees from debarked stems.…”
