Comparison of electric motors used in electric vehicle propulsion system

Abstract: Now days, it is vital to use electric vehicles (EVs) instead of traditional cars with internal combustion engines (ICEs) in order to reduce the high level of pollution in the environment, and many researchers are investigating the possible improvements on these vehicles. The main component of EVs is the electric motor and the selection of a motor with high efficiency, excellent dynamic response and high starting torque has a strong effect on the performance of EVs. In addition to that a reasonable price for th… Show more

“…Many nature-inspired optimization algorithms have been intiduced recently for solving simple and complex problems such as PSO, GA, and EHO. Among the developed algorithms, PSO and FA have been mostly applied in engineering problems [33][34][35]. Optimization methods are mainly based on the animating principle of finding the optimal location of food or partner within a search space.…”

“…The main contribution of this paper is the detailed study and comparison of the performance of major types of electric motors used in electric vehicles (EVs) applications. (Mohammad, Khalid S., and Aqeel S. Jaber.,2022) [49] reviewed and compared the major electric motors used in EVs based on the EV propulsion system requirements. The advantages and disadvantages of these motors (DC motors, Induction motors, SRM motors, and PMBL motors) are analyzed and evaluated.…”

“…The effect of armature inductance is lost for the transient power requirement in cranking. A d.c. series motor starter, which is characterised by low resistance with self-compensation feature of armature reaction, is a cost-effective choice as compared to the permanent magnet motors [35]. The reputed engine starter manufacturer (Bosch) provides 0.8 to 1.4 kW starter motor for engines up to 1,400 CC, 1.6 to 2.0 kW for utility vehicles, and 2.5 to 3.2 kW for light and medium size commercial vehicles with 12 V ratings.…”
