Comparison of effects of automated peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis on health‐related quality of life, sleep quality, and depression

Abstract: Few studies investigating the effects of automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL), depression, and sleep quality exist in the literature. We aimed to determine differences between APD and CAPD modalities with respect to these parameters. Twenty APD and 48 CAPD patients were included in this cross-sectional study. Biochemical values were measured at outpatient evaluation. A modified postsleep inventory was used to evaluate… Show more

“…Using BDI as a diagnostic tool with different cutoff scores ranging from 11 to 17, the frequency of depression was reported between 26% and 62.5%. [15][16][17] Using different depression screening measures, depression prevalence ranging from 14.8% to 52% has also been reported among PD patients. 13,18 Eventually, the prevalence of depression in PD patients obtained in the present study is within the suggested range in previous studies.…”

“…This is a matter of concern as CAPD and APD treatments are complementary in terms of quality of life [28,[41][42][43]; also, they are both offered to assisted PD patients. The fact that nurse-assisted PD is associated with a lower risk of transfer to HD must be considered when assistance modality is presented to end-stage renal disease patients, and should be reconsidered during the course of PD.…”
