Comparison of Dynamic Visual Acuity Between Water Polo Players and Sedentary Students

Abstract: In this study, we examined differences in dynamic visual acuity between elite and subelite water polo players and sedentary students. To measure dynamic visual acuity binocularly, we asked participants to indicate the orientation of a broken ring, similar to the Landolt C, which increased in size as it moved across a computer screen. Two different speeds, three possible trajectories, and two different levels of contrast were evaluated. There were statistically significant differences between elite players and … Show more

“…However, this study is not exempt from limitations, and they must be acknowledged. First, our experimental sample was formed of physically active young adults, and the results of this study may vary in professional athletes from specific disciplines and people of other ages (Dørum et al, 2016; Ishigaki & Miyao, 1993; Ishigaki & Miyao, 1994; Plourde et al, 2017; Quevedo-Junyent et al, 2011). Second, previous studies have observed a sex-effect on the ability to track multiple objects and dynamic visual acuity (Ishigaki & Miyao, 1994; Roudaia & Faubert, 2017) and thus, the level of association between the multiple object tracking task and dynamic visual acuity could be different between men and women.…”

“…Athletes from different disciplines (i.e., basketball, tennis, soccer, water-polo, baseball, motorsport, etc.) have demonstrated better dynamic visual acuity than non-athletes (Hughes et al, 1993; Quevedo-Junyent et al, 2011; Schneiders et al, 2010; Uchida et al, 2012; Ward & Williams, 2003). These dynamic visual acuity advantages observed in professional athletes seem to be mediated by a more efficient eye movement pattern, namely by a good alignment between gaze and the moving object of interest, and an optimal saccade control (fewer reverse saccades) (Palidis et al, 2017).…”

“…Die Erfolgsquote im Sport steht in Zusammenhang mit gutem dynamischen Sehen. Spitzensportler verfügen über eine bessere dynamische Sehschärfe, die durch Training verbessert werden kann [11]. Jedoch hat im Bereich des (Leistungs-)Sports die visuelle Leistungsdiagnostik noch immer einen sehr geringen Stellenwert [12].…”

“…Kinetic visual acuity can help to predict uncorrected distance visual acuity to some extent ( 12 ). Existing studies have shown that the visual environment created in the process of physical activities is quite consistent with the principle of ciliary-muscle regulation, so specialized physical activities can improve people's kinetic visual acuity ( 13 , 14 ), and also improve uncorrected distance visual acuity, as well as create a series of changes in eye parameters ( 15 19 ). Therefore, special physical activities designed under the guidance of ciliary-muscle regulation principle, can improve children's uncorrected distance visual acuity by promoting their kinetic visual acuity, which is an effective measure to ameliorate children's vision.…”
