Abstract. The aim of this work is to evaluate the degradation state of natural stones after their exposure to fire. These building and decorative materials, widely used in the architectural heritage, suffer irreversible damage when exposed to high temperatures. Therefore, knowledge of their residual durability is crucial in order to determine whether the post-fire building structure should be restored, reinforced or demolished. For this purpose, limestones (calcarenites) and white marbles collected from local quarries were subjected to heating-cooling cycles in a muffle furnace at various temperatures up to 1100°C. After each exposure, the selected samples were characterized at room temperature using X-ray diffraction (XRD), micro-Raman and ATR-FTIR infrared techniques. The results obtained showed that the mineralogical nature of both calcareous and marble natural stones is a key factor in their thermal stability when exposed to high temperatures. Above 570°C, natural stones undergo calcite decarbonation at different temperature ranges. Marble, which is mineralogically monophasic, underwent decomposition at 800°C, similar to calcite in its pure state. Calcarenite was decomposed at a much lower temperature of about 700 °C. This study classifies marble as more thermally stable than calcarenite.

This paper investigates the durable performance of well-curing mortars with varying replacement levels of dolostone filler (0–30% by mass) in comparison with the same replacement of limestone filler and the stability of mortars with dolostone filler for 2 years at 40 oC. Compressive strength, total porosity, capillary water absorption, and chloride migration coefficients were determined. Results show that compressive strength decreases, and the total porosity increases with increasing filler content due to a dilution effect, regardless of the filler composition. The capillary water absorption and the chloride migration coefficients rise significantly for mortars with 20–30% filler. But, the dolostone filler cements have lower chloride coefficients than those with limestone blended cements. Mortars with dolostone show no length changes without later reduction of compressive strength, and XRD and FT-IR analyses suggest the formation of hydrotalcite-like phases.

Physico-chemical characterization of paint industry residues for incorporation in cementitious matrix

Before being reused, industrial waste needs to have its composition determined so that in the future, it will not cause harm to the people and to the environment. The present study proposes the characterization and reuse of the residue remaining in the production of leveling masses and textures as a component in the Portland cement mortar specimens in order to analyze the effects on the axial compressive strength. The residue generated was characterized by Infrared (IR) Absorption Spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Atomic Emission (AE) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG/DTG). All analyzes confirmed the predominant presence of dolomite (CaMg(CO 3 ) 2 ) as the main component and absence of potentially toxic metals. The addition of 10% of the residue on the cement and sand mass or the replacement of 10% of the sand mass in the mortars had small impact on the axial compression strength. The standard deviation values found lead to the conclusion that the compressive strength of the studied mortars can be considered statistically similar.
