Comparison of Different Techniques in Breast Cancer Radiotherapy Planning

Abstract: Objective: This study aimed to minimize the radiation dose to organs other than the target tissue during adjuvant therapy applied for breast cancer, by using different planning methods. Materials and Methods:30 women with T1-2 N1-3 M0 breast cancer were included in the study. Planning was performed using four different methods to the supraclavicular area, internal, and external tangential fields. All planning was done in a virtual environment by and the requested data was obtained. All patients were treated by… Show more

“…However, there are trade-offs involved in these techniques in an attempt to improve the planning target volume (PTV) and OARs dosimetry. It was also documented in literature that several institutions and radiation therapy departments utilize varying treatment techniques and fractionation schedules for breast radiation treatments [ 11 , 12 ]. These differences could result in overall compromised quality of patient care, manpower, available resources and productivity of the department.…”

“…The average value of TCP, which represented the result of all dosimetric calculations, did not show a significant difference in the two techniques, and in fact, both techniques provided similar tumor control. Kara et al pointed to the superiority of the MIT, with a reduction of more than 50% in hot spots, and the values of the minimum and mean dose in the MIT 45 were close to the values of the prescription dose. In our study, all values for the left lung, except V20, were significantly different in the two methods, and in the MIT, the dose and volume of the exposed lung decreased.…”
