Comparison of different iron-based catalysts for photocatalytic removal of imidacloprid

Abstract: This contribution is concerned with the investigation of the removal efficiency of the pyridine-based insecticide imidacloprid from aqueous solution irradiated with UV or visible light in the presence of AlFe-pillared clay and Fe-ZSM-5 as catalysts. The obtained results were compared with those achieved using the photo-Fenton reaction as well as TiO 2 Degussa P25. A stability study under natural conditions and direct photolysis in the presence of both light sources were also performed.

“…When the soil-incorporated chlorpyrifos was spiked with Fe 2+ , an increase in the rate of photodegradation of chlorpyrifos was observed from 3.5×10 −2 to 5.5×10 −2 (p<0.05) and its t 0.5 was decreased from 19.74 to 12.6 days ( Table 2). The role of Fe 2+ in catalyzing the photodegradation of pesticides has also been reported by other authors (Guzsvany et al 2010;Kochany 1992;Tariq et al 2014;Zheng and Ye 2001).…”

“…Guzsvany et al studied the potential of AlFe-pillared clay and Fe-ZSM-5 catalysts for the removal of aqueous imidacloprid under UV irradiation or visible light. The comparison of the obtained results was also provided with the data obtained by using the photo-Fenton reaction and TiO2 Degussa P25 (Guzsvany et al 2010) Thus, the present study was formulated to determine the influence of Cu 2+ and Fe 2+ ions on the persistence/dissipation of soil-incorporated chlorpyrifos. The importance of the study stems from the fact that enhanced levels of certain metals present in the soil may trigger the photodegradation process of pesticides.…”

“…scholars applied this new technique to identification of photolysis products of pesticide (Dearth, Korniski, and Gerlock 1995;Ding, Jacobs, and Lavine 2011;Gu et al 2003;Guzsvany et al 2010;Lovdahl et al 2000). In this study, the aim was to investigate the photolysis of clothianidin.…”

“…Because of their frequent use, chemical stability and resistance to biodegradation, they are encountered in waste waters, and, due to their hazardous effects on ecosystems and human health, their removal is imperative (Stapleton et al, 2006). With this in mind, we have recently paid significant attention to the study of the model compounds (Abramović et al, 2003;Abramović et al, 2004aAbramović et al, , 2004b and pyridine containing pesticides (Abramović et al, 2007;Šojić et al, 2009;Guzsvány et al, 2010;Šojić et al, 2010a, 2010bBanić et al, 2011).…”
