Comparison of Crosslinking Kinetics of UV-Transparent Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate Copolymer and Polyolefin Elastomer Encapsulants

Abstract: Encapsulants based on ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers (EVA) or polyolefin elastomers (POE) are essential for glass or photovoltaic module laminates. To improve their multi-functional property profile and their durability, the encapsulants are frequently peroxide crosslinked. The crosslinking kinetics are affected by the macromolecular structure and the formulation with stabilizers such as phenolic antioxidants, hindered amine light stabilizers or aromatic ultraviolet (UV) absorbers. The main objective of thi… Show more

“…The dependence of t gel on the heating temperature followed the Arrhenius function (Figure 3b), indicating the main origin (i.e., cross-linking mechanism) was the same within the present temperature range. 34,35 From the slope, the activation energy (E a,gel ) for the gelation was estimated and the value was 48 kJ/mol. The G′ reached nearly constant at t heat = 3 h, and the constant value was ca.…”

“…The EVA encapsulant contained a peroxide crosslinking formulation, a vinyl silane adhesion promoter, and a UV stabilizer. A thoroughly structural and crosslinking kinetics analysis of the EVA encapsulant is provided in [19]. For lamination, two EVA films with an initial thickness of 0.48 mm were placed between two glass substrates.…”

“…Post-processing methods, such as curing, crosslinking, or surface treatments, can also influence the release kinetics and stability of the incorporated antioxidants ( Wallner et al, 2022 ). These methods can further modify the material properties, including porosity, degradation rate, and surface characteristics, thereby impacting the release behavior.…”
