Comparison of corneal thickness measurements using ultrasound pachymetry, noncontact tonopachy, Pentacam HR, and Fourier-domain OCT

Abstract: We retrospectively compared the central corneal thickness (CCT) obtained by ultrasound pachymetry (USP; SP-3000, Tomey Corp., Nagoya, Japan), non-contact tonopachy (TP) (NT-530P, Nidek Co., Ltd., Gamagori, Japan), Pentacam HR (OCULUS Inc., Wetzlar, Germany), and RTVue optical coherence tomography (OCT) (Optovue Inc., Fremont, CA, USA) in 78 eyes of 78 healthy subjects with myopia. Agreement between the measurement methods was evaluated using 95% confidence intervals for the limits of agreement (LoA). The mean … Show more

“…Fifth, we used noncontact ultrasound pachymetry to measure CCT rather than contact ultrasound pachymetry. However, noncontact pachymetry is easily conducted during consultation and several studies have shown that these two methods differ negligibly in terms of CCT measurements [54,55]. Sixth, since Brockmann et al and Peraza-Nieves et al respectively used AS-OCT and Pentacam to measure CCT [6,45], it is possible that the CCTmeasuring technique explains the different findings of our study.…”

“…Thus, for example, the Optovue SD-OCT (Freemont, CA) is able to acquire eight evenly spaced 6.0 mm radial cross-sections to provide corneal curvature data and corneal and epithelial thickness maps, but does not allow to obtain precise maps as in corneal tomography. 15,16 Within the MS-39, OCT is combined with a Placido-disk topographer; clinical studies have shown that such approach demonstrates high repeatability of corneal tomography measurements. 17,18 In a previous study, Wyle ˛gała et al has analyzed the utility of Revo for obtaining corneal tomography images.…”

“…The USP CCT in this study was similar to previous studies in rhesus macaques using the same instrument (486 ± 38 µm), 5 and slightly thinner than human CCT measured by USP (535 ± 34 µm vs. 547 ± 35 µm). 30 , 31 In our study population, females had slightly thicker corneas than males by a mean of 10 µm and that difference was considered statistically significant using a mixed-effect linear regression analysis. Although most studies in humans do not find statistically significant differences between male and female CCT, 30 , 32 some studies have reported that variations in the CCT in females associate with the menstrual cycle.…”
