Comparison of conventional, diffusion, and perfusion MRI between infratentorial ganglioglioma and pilocytic astrocytoma

Abstract: Background The differentiation of infratentorial ganglioglioma and pilocytic astrocytoma may be therapeutically relevant, which is sometimes challenging to both pathologists and neuroradiologists. Purpose To evaluate the conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and dynamic susceptibility contrast-enhanced perfusion weighted imaging (DSC-PWI) features of infratentorial ganglioglioma compared with pilocytic astrocytoma. Material and Methods This retrospective study enr… Show more

“…More importantly, cystic solid masses with moderate to significant enhancement mainly in dorsal and posterior margins were more common in GGs located in the medulla oblongata ( 6 ). While in astrocytomas, the imaging usually showed cystic changes with nodules and enhanced cyst wall and nodules with few calcifications in enhanced scans ( 19 ). Johnson et.al also reported that curved band lesion with low or mixed density and common calcification had few cysts and enhancement, which was usually observed in oligodendroglioma ( 20 ).…”

“…On apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) map, gangliogliomas have been reported to show a lower ADC value and higher relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) on dynamic susceptibility contrast imaging than either oligodendrogliomas or pilocytic astrocytomas. 40,41 Gangliogliomas with BRAF p.V600E mutation are reported to have lower ADC values than gangliogliomas without BRAF p.V600E mutation. 42 Imaging spectrums of gangliogliomas in three different patients are shown in Fig.…”

“…Due to overlap of imaging appearances, differentiating cerebellar GGs from the cerebellar PAs can be challenging [87]. It has been reported that cerebellar GGs have lower relative ADCmin and higher relative CBV than PAs [88].…”
