Comparison of cold water sponging and acetaminophen in control of fever among children attending a tertiary hospital in South Nigeria

Abstract: Background:A wide range of childhood illnesses are accompanied by fever, leading to varied attempts at treatment by caregivers at home before coming to a hospital. Common modalities of treatment include use of antipyretics and physical methods such as cold water sponging, fanning and removal of clothing. These treatment modalities have been received with varied attitudes among physicians and the scientific community. This study was to assess the efficacy of both modalities in first-line management of fever in … Show more

“…Repeat smears, conducted at 6 and 12 h after admission increased the diagnostic yield considerably, with an additional 21 (11.9%) children diagnosed smear positive. Even though tepid sponging and the use of antipyretics were expected to significantly reduce body temperature within an hour [ 15 ], axillary temperature of 37.7–37.8 °C was obtained for the additional patients in which malaria parasite were confirmed. Strikingly, the cumulative detection rate of malaria microscopy up to 12 h of initial negative parasitological results was very comparable to the detection rate of baseline RDT ( x 2 = 0.046, p = 0.83).…”

(24,28,37) Em diversas pesquisas, a sponging morna tem sido utilizada em conjunto com um antitérmico. “…It is further known that the home remedy of cold water sponging is used on febrile child to produce rapid temperature reduction although the use of Paracetamol over the counter medication works faster. 13 Hot water compress on the lumber region can aid defecation during hydrotherapy but care must be taken to avoid scalding in children. 4 In addition, alternating hot and cold compresses have been used very effectively in reducing pain and breast engorgement in post -natal mothers.…”
