Background: Headache is one of the most common types of pain which is considered among the most disabling of diseases. However, the severity of disability in some headache patients is more than others. Objectives: The aim of the present study was to compare different types of headache regarding pain-related variables and psychological factors. We also examined the predicting factors of disability in patients with headache. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed in 320 patients with various types of headache based on the International Headache Society criteria, which was assessed by neurologists. Data was collected using migraine disability assessment for disability, frequency of headache and for pain intensity, patient health questionnaire for depression, and pain anxiety symptoms scale for pain-related anxiety. ANOVAs and post hoc Tukey's tests were used for comparing various types of headaches regarding pain-related and psychological factors. Regression analyses assessed the relation of pain-related and psychological variables with disability. Results: Patients with different types of headache revealed no significant differences regarding pain intensity (P = 0.27). Migraine patients showed the most pain frequency and chronicity compared to the other patients (P = 0.000). The levels of disability (P = 0.000), anxiety (P = 0.000) and depressive symptoms (P = 0.000) were also higher in patients with migraine compared to patients suffering from cluster or tension type headache. Pain chronicity (P = 0.01), anxiety (P = 0.007) and depression (P = 0.002) made significant contributions to the explanation of variance in 'disability'. Conclusions: The findings add further evidence to the relevance of cognitive-behavioral models of pain suggesting an important role for pain-related emotions regarding the consequences of pain (e.g. disability). The current data could help clinicians to decide which factors should be considered for a successful treatment of disability in headache patients.

Background:Migraine is a common disorder which has psychiatric sequelae.Objective:The objective of this study was to determine the clinical pattern and psychiatric comorbidity of migraine.Materials and Methods:100 cases of migraine seen over a period of one year were analysed to know the sociodemographic characteristics, clinical pattern and psychiatric morbidity.Results:Maximum patients were between 31-40 years of age group (40%), females (78.0%), married (76%) and housewives (56.0%). Family history of migraine was present in 12% cases. Average age of onset was 22 years. Unilateral and throbbing type of headache was most common. The commonest frequency was one to two per week. Migraine without aura was commonest sub-type (80%). Generalized anxiety disorder (F41.1) was the most common psychiatric disorder (34%), followed by mixed anxiety and depressive disorder (F41.2) (18%) and depressive episode (F32) (14%). In 22% cases, no psychiatric disorder could be elicited.Conclusion:The present study confirms that majority patients with migraine had psychiatric disorders. This needs timely detection and appropriate intervention to treat and control the migraine effectively.

Background Mass psychogenic illness has been documented for more than 600 years in a variety of culture, ethnic, and religious settings. The aim of this study was to assess the nature and characteristics of mass psychogenic illness in Tigray, Northern Ethiopia, Methods School based cross-sectional study was conducted in haraza elementary school from January –February, 2020. Students who were victims of an episode were subjects of the study. A total of twelve students were investigated using semi-structured questionnaire for quantitative study. Seven key informant interviews were conducted using guiding questionnaires. Quantitative data was analyzed using XL sheet while qualitative data was analyzed manually. Result the mean age of study participants was 14 years (SD±1.3). Majority (87%) were teenage female students. The incident was unspecified disease with psychiatric disorder, migraine and syncope with no plausible organic causes. An important feature of migraine and syncope was their co-morbidity with mass psychogenic illness. The community perceived that Evil-devil force and blaming as being an evil-eye were common causes for the occurrence of an episode. Conclusion lack of empirical knowledge and awareness about its management and prevention among community members and health professionals resulted exaggerated rumor that would perceived as newly emerging disease that affected school activities. Integrating MPI in PHEM package at health facility level, advocacy workshops for media and other relevant stakeholders will minimize its impact for the future.
