Comparison of clinical and radiographic peri‐implant parameters among obese and non‐obese patients: A 5‐year study

Abstract: Patients with obesity are at risk of increased localized peri-implant soft and hard tissue inflammation. It is recommended that clinicians should educate obese patients about risk of increased peri-implant tissue inflammation and susceptibility to bone loss and stipulate stringent oral hygiene care for ideal peri-implant health.

“…Another remarkable finding in the present study is that the patients in T2DM and prediabetes groups had increased mean BMI that ranged from 29.6 to 37.2 kg/m 2 . Recent cross‐sectional and longitudinal data suggests that increased bodyweight is a significant systemic risk factor for both periodontal and peri‐implant tissue inflammation . In a recent study by Vohra and colleagues .…”

“…Dental implant success is determined by the maintenance of peri‐implant bone level. The overall success certainly depends on a number of factors including oral hygiene care, smoking, and smokeless tobacco use, chronic systemic inflammatory response such as obesity and type‐2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) . Chronic hyperglycemia is considered as a typical risk‐factor that causes soft tissue inflammation and RBL around natural teeth and implants .…”

“…In addition, the patients included in T2DM group presented some kind of obesity. Recent research indicates that obesity may be a significant modifying risk factor for periodontal and peri‐implant inflammation and therefore, this may have affected the outcomes of the present results.…”

“…These regular oral hygiene practice reflected stable clinical values over a period of 3 years. 29,42 The present study did not apply logistic regression analysis to preclude the effect of obesity on peri-implant outcomes. If remained untreated, may ultimately lead to worse radiographic scores.…”
