Comparison of clinical and functional outcome between surgical treatment and carbon ion radiotherapy for pelvic chondrosarcoma

Abstract: Although more patients need to be monitored to assess the clinical and functional outcomes of CIRT for patients with chondrosarcoma of the pelvis, this treatment might offer an acceptable alternative.

“…It can help clinicians better stratify patients preoperatively for accurate personalized treatment in clinical practice. For these patients with high risk of recurrence, more aggressive regimens can be developed, or in combination with some new radiotherapy and chemotherapy, such as carbon ion radiotherapy . In the clinical radiomics nomogram based on DWI features, the proportion of clinical data increased.…”

This indicates that clinical data plays a more important role in the single-sequence DWI model.…”

“…For unresectable non-skull base chondrosarcomas, the NIRS experience of 75 patients with CIRT demonstrated 55% and 57% 5-year local control and overall survival, with four patients reported as having experienced grade 3 or 4 skin/soft tissue late adverse effects [115]. A small retrospective study comparing surgery vs. CIRT for pelvic chondrosarcomas showed similar survival but improved functional outcomes with CIRT [116]. At least one case report has shown the successful treatment of primary cardiac angiosarcoma in a young female [117].…”

“…At present, surgical resection remains the primary treatment option for chondrosarcoma (2). Due to its poor response to conventional chemotherapy and radiation therapy, chondrosarcoma is challenging to manage (3).…”
