Comparison of CHROMagar Salmonella Medium and Xylose-Lysine-Desoxycholate and Salmonella-Shigella Agars for Isolation of Salmonella Strains from Stool Samples

Abstract: The growth and appearance of 115 stock Salmonella isolates on a new formulation of CHROMagar Salmonella (CAS) medium were compared to those on xylose-lysine-desoxycholate agar (XLD), Salmonella-Shigella agar (SS), and Hektoen enteric agar (HEA) media. CAS medium was then compared prospectively to XLD and SS for the detection and presumptive identification of Salmonella strains in 500 consecutive clinical stool samples. All stock Salmonella isolates produced typical mauve colonies on CAS medium. Nine Salmonella… Show more

“…Salmonella isolates in dairy cows were serotyped as S. Kentucky (8,20:i:z 6 ) (n = 3), S. Anatum (3,10, [15], [15,34]:e,h:1,6) (n = 1), and S. Typhimurium (1,4, [5],12:i:1,2) (n = 1). In addition, 1 isolate in buffalo was S. Kentucky (8,20:i:z 6 ) and the 1 isolate in camel was S. Abony (1,4, [5],12,27:b:e,n,x) ( Table 1).…”

“…MLCB is used principally for Salmonella detection in food and environmental samples, due to its high selectivity (Nye et al, 2002;van Schothorst et al, 1987). On the other hands, XLD is the most commonly used medium for isolating S. enterica (Nye et al, 2002), and CAS is superior to other selective agars for isolating Salmonella from stool samples (Gailot et al, 1999;Maddocks et al, 2002;Perez et al, 2003).…”
