Stimulating the growth of plants, increasing their productivity, and resistance to stress factors are important tasks facing scientists and producers of agricultural products. Different compounds of natural origin can be used as biostimulants. Such chemicals as humic, fulvic, and salicylic acids, mineral elements, amino acids, chitosan, vitamins, poly-, and oligosaccharides are the typical components of biostimulants. They affected not only plant growth. Biostimulants also improve biosynthetic activity, including chlorophyll synthesis, and accumulation of plant metabolites. Alginite, founded in Slovakia in Maar near Pinciná village northeast of Lučenec, was studied as a plant growth stimulator. The application of biostimulants to medicinal plants allows increasing in their biomass and productivity. The effect of alginite on in vitro growth of Rhodiola rosea L. plants and their antioxidant activity has been analyzed in this study. Adding 1 or 10 mL.L -1 of MS medium alginite extract solution diluted to the concentration of 1% resulted in intensive plant growth. Shoots weight increased 4.48-6.64-fold compared to the control. Adding alginite extract solution also stimulated root growth (3.00-5.58-fold). Despite the decrease in the specific content of flavonoids in the plants, grown on media with alginite, the total content of flavonoids in these plants was higher than in the control ones due to a significant increase in biomass. The antioxidant activity of the samples grown on the alginite medium was higher than that of the control plants. Thus, alginite, a compound of natural origin, can stimulate the growth of R. rosea and increase the bioactivity of these plants.

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of humic acid (HA) obtained by extraction from alginate on the incubation of roes and fry development in African cichlids, Labidochormis caeruleus, as well as their influence on the stabilization of the physicochemical parameters of water in an aquarium during artificial breeding. The roes were obtained by extruding from a female buccal cavity immediately after fertilization. For the experiment, 4 groups of 40 roes were formed in an incubator with an artificial hatchery. Groups 1–3 were exposed to 1%, 5%, and 10% concentrations of HA, respectively. The control group C was not exposed to HA. In all groups, the mortality and size differences of the fry, as well as the temperature, pH, hardness, nitrite, and nitrate levels in the tanks, were determined during a 30-day monitoring period until the resorption of the yolk sac. The results of this study indicated the ability of HA in 5% and 10% concentrations to reduce nitrite and nitrate levels in the aquatic environment, which significantly reduced the mortality of roes and the survivability of the fry. The determination of the morphological measurements of the fry revealed an increased body length in the groups exposed to 5% and 10% HA concentrations compared to the control group by the end of the monitored period. It was also noted that the yolk sac was resorbed two days earlier in the same groups than in the control. Thus, the results showed that HAs are suitable for use in the artificial aquarium incubation of roes and fry development, which are increasingly exposed to adverse environmental factors. The knowledge obtained in this study and its transfer into practice can allow even less experienced aquarists to successfully breed aquarium fish species that could not normally be bred under artificial conditions without the addition of HA.

The publication aims to present some knowledge about the less-known but at the same time very scarce bituminous rock alginite with comprehensive practical use in the form of a brief overview. Alginite is an organic-bituminous rock that was formed about six million years ago from dead fossil algae Botryococcus braunii Kütz and diatoms in the area of today's Pannonian Basin. In Europe, alginite deposits have been discovered in Hungary, Austria and Slovakia in Pinciná village. Alginite mining is mostly used in Hungary in the Gerce area. Alginite is grey to dark grey, in the wet state dark laminated, clayey with the form of disintegrating clay. Alginite has very valuable physical, mechanical and chemical properties. It is a natural bituminous rock with a favourable content of basic nutrients (P, K, Ca, Mg and S) for plants except for nitrogen content. Alginite contains a large number of microelements, which increase the agrochemical possibilities of its use. It can be applied in its natural form without chemical treatment. It is an ecological raw material that improves the soil and does not negatively affec the environment. Alginite has become the subject of research in many workplaces. The overview presents the basic physical, mechanical and chemical properties of alginite and selected knowledge and research results that have enabled the practical use of alginite in natural or technologically modified form in agriculture in the formation of growth, development and crop formation and quality of seeds and fruits of cultivated crops, forestry, remediation and improvement of soil and water properties, decomposition of herbicides, stabilization of beneficial microorganisms in animal organisms and other areas.
