Comparison of Burden on Youth in Communicating with Elderly using Images Versus Photographs

Abstract: Abstract-Conversation is a good preventative against behavioral problems in the elderly. However, caregivers are usually very busy tending to patients and lack the time to communicate extensively with them. Toward overcoming such problems actively listening volunteers have more opportunities to communicate with the elderly, but the number of skilled volunteers is limited. Therefore, we investigated conversational support systems for inexperienced volunteers; such systems usually include content such as photogr… Show more

“…Co-imagination as a communication support method for prevention of dementia was proposed by Otake in 2006, which should support daily interactive communication between people without care experience and the elderly with images [4]. However, Iwamoto Miyuki investigated the Conversation Support System, which was expected that the young volunteer would feel less stress when talking with the elderly by common contents of photographs and videos [5]. Iwamoto decided to use photos as the contents of this system, because from the experimental results so far, although the video made the subjects feel less pressure, the photo made the elderly and young volunteers talk longer [5].…”

“…He found that regular daily conversations allow participants and listeners to have pleasant shared interactions. Miyuki Iwamoto et al [16] researched a dialogue support system hoping to reduce the stress of young volunteers in the system when talking to the elderly through the shared content of photos and videos. The results of this were that the video content caused subjects to feel less stressed, but that the photos allowed conversation between older people and young volunteers to last for longer periods of time.…”

“…Poor interaction and lack of social participation are among the contributing factors to social isolation which are closely associated with depression, one of the major risk factors for the development of Alzheimer’s dementia ( Santini et al, 2015 ). Many studies ( Westermann et al, 1996 ; Thierry and Roberts, 2007 ; Sitaram et al, 2011 ; Iwamoto et al, 2015 ; Leahy et al, 2018 ) have shown that reminiscence and communication about past photographs between older adults and younger volunteers, healthcare workers, or families encourage positive interaction and social engagement. And therefore, they are highly effective in improving the emotional state and alleviating depression in older adults.…”
