Comparison of box-air-mass-factors and radiances for Multiple-Axis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) geometries calculated from different UV/visible radiative transfer models

Abstract: Abstract. The results of a comparison exercise of radiative transfer models (RTM) of various international research groups for Multiple AXis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) viewing geometry are presented. Besides the assessment of the agreement between the different models, a second focus of the comparison was the systematic investigation of the sensitivity of the MAX-DOAS technique under various viewing geometries and aerosol conditions. In contrast to previous comparison exercises, bo… Show more

“…In the past two decades, ground-based multi-axis DOAS (MAX-DOAS) techniques have been developed, measuring scattered sunlight at multiple low elevation angles (Wagner et al, 2004(Wagner et al, , 2007Heckel et al, 2005;Frieß et al, 2006;Sinreich et al, 2005;Li et al, 2008Li et al, , 2010Li et al, , 2013Irie et al, 2008Irie et al, , 2009Clémer et al, 2010). In contrast to the zenith DOAS, MAX-DOAS has significant sensitivity to tropospheric gas absorption due to increased photon path length through the lower troposphere.…”

“…This method is called "geometric approximation". However, geometric approximation of AMF could result in large errors under high aerosol load conditions (Wagner et al, 2007). In addition, the relative azimuth angle, defined as the angle between the viewing direction and the sun, also plays an important role in the AMF calculation.…”

“…In addition to scattering of the direct solar light more than half of the incoming intensity at a given point comes from the diffuse sky radiation (Aas and Hokedal, 1999). To assess this properly we plan to run a ray trace model, for instance as published by Wagner et al (2007). We will then also model how much of the observed light that is scattered above the gas plume.…”
