Comparison of benthic oxygen exchange measured by aquatic Eddy Covariance and Benthic Chambers in two contrasting coastal biotopes (Bay of Brest, France)

Abstract: HAL is a multi-disciplinary open access archive for the deposit and dissemination of scientific research documents, whether they are published or not. The documents may come from teaching and research institutions in France or abroad, or from public or private research centers. L'archive ouverte pluridisciplinaire HAL, est destinée au dépôt et à la diffusion de documents scientifiques de niveau recherche, publiés ou non, émanant des établissements d'enseignement et de recherche français ou étrangers, des labor… Show more

“…Other methods include estimates of photosynthetic parameters via incubations of sporophytes (or parts of sporophytes; Borum et al 2002), using laboratory aquaria (Duarte et al 2013; Burdett et al 2019) or more recently in the field (Noël et al 2010; Rodgers et al 2015; Edwards et al 2020) with measurement of net oxygen evolution used as a proxy for carbon fixation (Antón et al 2011). More recently eddy flux covariance methods have been developed, integrating in situ oxygen fluxes and velocity measurements to estimate community integrated productivity, but their deployment has so far been restricted to sheltered habitats (Attard et al 2019; Polsenaere et al 2021). Photosynthetic rates can be measured under a range of light levels to generate photosynthesis–irradiance (P–I) curves, which describe the relationship between photosynthesis and light (Kirk 2011).…”

“…This would suggest that the significant tidal (12h) component in Ba/Ca and Mn/Ca records through P. maximus (Fig. 3) is driven directly by redox changes over the strong tidal cycle in the Bay of Brest (see Polsenaere et al, 2021) and resuspension of Ba and Mn due to tidal currents (Hily et al, 1992), while tidal rhythms in Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca may be a consequence of the scallop's calcification response to changes in its environment (e.g., temperature, salinity and light availability) through the large (up to 7m range) tidal cycle (Fig. 7).…”

“…In this technique, joint high frequency measurement of O 2 (>10 Hz) and of vertical currents at a given point in BBL by an acoustic doppler velocimeter (ADV) enables continuous estimates of the O 2 exchange flux and O 2 dynamics within the BBL. The technique is also applicable in habitats with hard and complex substrate in coastal or deep-ocean settings (Berg et al, 2009;Rovelli et al, 2015;Attard et al, 2019;Polsenaere et al, 2021).…”
