Comparison of B-type natriuretic peptide and NT proBNP as predictors of survival in patients on high-flux hemodialysis and hemodiafiltration

Abstract: End stage renal failure is associated with very high risk of cardiovascular disease. Serum levels of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and NT proBNP reflect cardiovascular risk but it is unknown which of these peptides is a better predictor of survival in this population. BNP and NT proBNP levels and other relevant parameters were measured in 103 patients on high-flux hemodialysis (HD) and hemodiafiltration. Patients were followed for 4 years or until transplantation or death. Median BNP level was 262 pg/mL whi… Show more

“…After patients consented to the study, their height was recorded and they were carefully weighed and their when undressed to their underwear. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated as weight (kilograms)/(height in meters) . They were asked to lay flat in an examination room at the dialysis unit.…”

“…And all of these results benefit the patient by decreasing the risk of CVD. 13,14 This study also compared the status of hypertension and the adequacy of blood pressure control. 76.7% patients were receiving one or more antihypertensive agents to control their hypertension when enrolled.…”

“…Notable is that TnT has molecular size of 37 kDa but also exists as fragments ranging in size from 8 kDa to 30 kDa (26,27), and troponin I has size between 21 kDa to 24 kDa (28). The cardiac markers are all predictors of increased risk of mortality (13,17,18,21,24,(29)(30)(31)(32).…”
