Comparison of arousal and preference assessment outcomes for sex offenders with intellectual disabilities

Abstract: We compared outcomes of arousal and preference assessments for five adult male alleged sexual offenders with intellectual disabilities. Arousal assessments involved the use of the penile plethysmograph to measure changes in penile circumference to both deviant (males and females under the age of 18) and nondeviant (males and females over the age of 18) video clips. Paired-stimulus preference assessments were arranged to present still images from the video clips used in the arousal assessments. Results showed c… Show more

“…In this way, the process resembled a brief, daily MSWO (Carr et al 2000). As previously mentioned, a study by Reyes et al (2016) showed that results from a paired-stimulus preference assessment corresponded to results from a penile plethysmograph, providing support for participant choice as a means to identify sexually arousing stimuli. All video media were preapproved by the facility's administration.…”

“…Similarly, Reyes et al (2016) compared the results of a paired-choice visual preference assessment of sexual partners to the results of an arousal assessment that used penile plethysmography to measure arousal in adult sex offenders with developmental disabilities. Reyes et al found a correspondence between assessment results for four out of five participants.…”

“…Other studies have been conducted by behavior analysts to identify inappropriate sexual arousal to children in adults with developmental disabilities. For example, Reyes et al (2006) and Reyes, Vollmer, and Hall (2017) used a penile plethysmograph to measure change in penile circumference to appropriate/non-deviant stimuli (adult men and women) and inappropriate/deviant stimuli (children). They used stimulus preference assessment procedures and penile plethysmography (to measure tumescence) to assess sex offenders with intellectual disabilities for age and gender preferences.…”

“…Problems of potentially criminal behavior and social deviance can be assessed and treated using applied behavior-analytic technology in socially important settings. Reyes, Vollmer, and Hall (2017) studied whether paired stimulus preference assessments could be used to identify arousing stimuli in adult male alleged sexual offenders with intellectual disabilities (ID). The study was conducted in a residential treatment facility for offenders with ID.…”
