Comparison of aqua regia and HNO3-H2O2 procedures for extraction of Tl and some other elements from soils

Abstract: The relationship between aqua regia (ISO 11466) and HNO(3)-H(2)O(2) (ISO/CD 20279) extraction procedures for atomic emission spectrometric (ICP/OES and ICP/MS) determinations of Tl, P, Mn, Fe, Mg, Ca, Sr, Al, K, As, Bi, Zn, Pb, Co, Cd, Ni, V, Be, Cu and Cr was investigated. Soil samples (155) representing areas with different contents of the elements were selected for the comparison. Tl was the element of the highest interest and therefore the sampling sites were chosen to achieve as wide range of Tl contents … Show more

“…The advantages of this method are its ease of application, costeffectiveness, and consistency of results (35). The aqua-regia method is known to be able to release more heavy metals than a single acid alone (36). The difference in detection methods resulted in a difference from the amounts of As detected in previous studies (17-20, 22, 37).…”

“…The MS part was regularly controlled by a calibrating solution (all Perkin-Elmer SCIEX, Norwalk, CT, USA). The operating parameters were identical with those given in the previous papers (Pavlíčková et al 2003(Pavlíčková et al , 2005(Pavlíčková et al , 2006.…”

“…Tl in soils is usually of the pedogeochemical origin (Sager 1986, Jones et al 1990, Tremel and Mench 1998, Zbíral et al 2000, 2002, Pavlíčková et al 2003, 2005, 2006. There are only very few reports on the anthropogenic soil contamination.…”

“…Spectroscopic methods are frequently used for multielement determinations because of the sensitivity and selectivity of signals produced by atomic optical emission (Pavlíčková et al 2003). Such analyses require the indispensable pretreatment of dissolution of metals from the sample matrix (Nguyen, Braun, and Leermakers 2005).…”
