Comparison of Anterior Corneal Aberrometry, Keratometry and Pupil Size with Scheimpflug Tomography and Ray Tracing Aberrometer

Abstract: This study aimed to assess the anterior corneal wavefront aberrations, keratometry, astigmatism vectors and pupil size between Pentacam HR® (Oculus Optikgeraete GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany) and iTrace® (Tracey Technologies Corp., Houston, TX, USA). In this observational study, 100 eyes (50 healthy volunteers) were scanned in mesopic light condition with a Pentacam HR® and iTrace®. Anterior corneal aberrations (spherical aberration (Z40), vertical coma (Z3 − 1), horizontal coma (Z3 + 1)), keratometry in the flattest… Show more

“…The iTrace measures pupil size to be larger than that measured with a topographer as aberrometers operate on lower overall illumination than the latter. 30 Our study did not assess pseudoaccommodation using photopic pupil size, but that can be of interest to future studies.…”

“…However few of them can avoid the insu ciency that the imbalance of baseline characteristics of patients could generate confounding effect on statistical analysis. Parameters such as keratometry values, spherical refractive error, cylindrical refractive error and pupil diameter are all reported to have impact on visual quality [13][14][15] . For instance, patients with high myopia are more likely to choose ICL implantation rather than laser refractive surgery due to the limitation of corneal thickness.…”

“…There is a large body of published data on these devices demonstrating their comparability and the accuracy of the refractive outcome they provide both for spherical and toric IOLs. [18][19][20][21] Once the surgeon has decided on the preferred device a few steps can be taken to ensure success. It is evident, even with minimal experience of these devices, that there is a test-totest variation in measurements with all of them.…”

“…Today's cataract surgeons are presented with a wide range of devices that measure corneal curvature and convert those data into useful and accurate power and axis information that can be inserted into readily available toric calculators. There is a large body of published data on these devices demonstrating their comparability and the accuracy of the refractive outcome they provide both for spherical and toric IOLs 18–21 . Once the surgeon has decided on the preferred device a few steps can be taken to ensure success.…”
