To ensure a supply of dairy products, modern dairy farming has assumed an intensive nature, characterized by production in collective facilities with the presence of thermal conditioning, some automation level, and high-use inputs. Among the systems used for dairy cattle confinement, Compost-Bedded Pack Barns (CBPs) have been gaining importance and increasingly have been used in recent decades. CBPs must be designed and managed to ensure the best thermal comfort conditions throughout the year and, consequently, improve productivity, milk quality, and the health of the dairy herd. In this context, modeling via Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) emerges as a tool with huge potential for studying the thermal environmental conditions in the beds of CBPs, making it possible to improve projects and/or management practices in this kind of facility. This document is organized as a review, and its objective is to present the state of the art of the applicability of the CFD technique in the study of heat and mass transfer in CBP systems. So far, only four studies have used CFD for modeling CBP systems and have shown that the use of this tool helps to better understand the phenomena of heat and mass transfer in this kind of facility. Therefore, it is important that more studies using this technique in CBP systems be conducted, including additional considerations on constructive elements, animals, and the presence of beds in composting.

In this study, biogas residue fermented by biogas engineering was used as compost raw material, and different quality biochar was added in the composting process to explore the effect of biochar on the transformation of heavy metals in the composting process. The composting process was comprehensively analyzed with the potential ecological risk assessment of heavy metals and redundancy analysis. The addition of 10.0% biochar during composting had a strong passivation effect on exchangeable Cu and Cd, with passivation rates of 11.75 and 63.89%, respectively; the addition of 2.5 and 7.5% biochar had strong passivation ability for exchangeable Zn and Pb, and the passivation rates were 15.26 and 45.02%, respectively. At the end of composting, the potential ecological risk indexes of each treatment were T4 (10.0% biochar) > T3 (7.5% biochar) > T2 (5.0% biochar) > T1 (2.5% biochar) > CK (no biochar added). The risk of heavy metal pollution during the aerobic composting of biogas residue was low, which significantly reduced secondary pollution during the composting process.

The spatial variability and behavioural aspects of compost-bedded pack barns remain unknown in subtropical regions. In this study, we investigated whether spatial variability occurs in the thermal environment of a compost barn and how the behaviour of dairy cows with different numbers of lactations differs in this system. The spatial sampling design comprised a grid of 108 locations inside the facility. At each location, we measured air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and bed temperature at 9:00, 12:00, and 15:00. We performed 24-h behavioural observations. Regarding spatial variability, the north face showed high air temperature values, and the distribution of relative humidity varied from the north to the south face. Kriging maps revealed a high bedding temperature trend, indicating heterogeneous ventilation management. Primiparous cows visited the water trough during the hottest hours of the day, whereas multiparous cows displayed a higher probability of walking during these periods. In conclusion, we observed a heterogeneous management of ventilation through the spatial distribution of the thermal environment inside the compost-bedded pack barn, with multiparous cows exhibiting dominance over primiparous cows seeking environmental resources.
