Wet deposition (WD) and Dry deposition (DD) samples were collected during a period of 4 year (2006 to 2009) + is higher (64-80%) than the DD flux at three locations and slightly lower (48%) at a high altitude location. In case of sea salt (Na and Cl), WD fluxes were higher (63-90%) than the DD fluxes at all the four locations. The dominant ion in DD was NO 3 − at Pashan (semi-urban) and Sinhagad (high altitude), Ca 2+ at Swargate (traffic junction) and SO 4 2− at Bhosari (industrial). The difference in deposition fluxes between the four sites was attributed to the effect of the local sources. Deposition velocities of SO 4 2− and NH 4 + were < 1 cm/s while Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Na + , K + , NO 3 − , and Cl − exhibited deposition velocities ≥ 1 cm/s. At one of the sites Pashan, where the earlier data is available; DD rates showed increase in all the chemical components, except for NH 4 + after a period of about 2 decades.

Abstract. Five year (1995Five year ( -1999 datasets for inorganic major and trace components in PM 10 from three monitoring sites in Hong Kong are presented. The concentrations of most chemical constituents show a high degree of seasonality, with high concentrations in winter but low ones in summer, resulting from the combined effects of summer monsoon scavenging and the influx of the continental air mass of the winter monsoon. High correlations exist within crustal components, as well as within sea-salt components. Non-seasalt sulphate and ammonium ion contributions to the PM 10 mass are similar at all sites and are greatest in the winter months, showing the importance of non-local contributions. The concentrations of chemical components in PM 10 from this study are compared with those in wet deposition in Hong Kong, as well as with PM 10 results from other countries. In general, the Asian countries experience more elevated concentrations of PM 10 .

Dry deposition samples collected during 1999-2001 at a South China site using surrogate surfaces were analyzed by capillary electrophoresis. Collector surface properties played important roles to the dry deposition. The deposition velocities for various species ranged from 0.02 to 1.69 cm s(-1), in general agreement with literature values. More than 90% of Ca(2+) was deposited by sedimentation and its comparable values of dry or wet removal residence times imply that dry deposition is an important atmospheric removal process for the ubiquitous crustal species in South China, compared with precipitation scavenging. Relatively good agreement was found when the species deposition velocities were modeled based on up-to-date knowledge of particle dry deposition. The total depositions for anthropogenic and crustal species in northern China are likely to be much higher than those in the south, including our site where the fluxes of the acidic species SO(4)(2-) and NO(3)(-) were 4.4 and 2.2 g m(-2) year(-1), respectively. The sum of dry deposition for cations Na(+), Ca(2+), Mg(2+), and K(+) contributes 44% of the total flux, which is equivalent to the value estimated in Europe.
