Comparison of activities of daily living in two different one arm drive wheelchairs: a controlled trial

Abstract: ADL tasks in the NUW were completed more efficiently with no loss in quality of motor and process skills performance. This suggests that the NUW is a viable alternative to current one arm drive provision.

“…Many elderly individuals with multiple comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, arthritis, and peripheral neuropathies that affect their physical capacity propel with all 4 extremities for maximum benefit. The typical MWC user with hemiplegia propels their wheelchair using their unaffected arm and leg [201-205]. The seat height must be low enough and their pelvis stable on a supportive cushion to prevent sliding out of the seat in an attempt to use their leg for propulsion and steering [203].…”

“…Commonly used one arm drive manual wheelchairs include the lever-drive mechanism, the dual handrim mechanism both of which are inefficient and difficult to manoeuvre. The Neater Uniwheelchair (NUW) is a recent development, designed specifically for hemiplegic users which has been extensively researched [Mandy et al 7,8,9,10,11]. It is an Action 3 wheelchair to which a novel propulsion and steering kit is attached.…”

“…In addition the kits can be attached to either side for use by either right- or left-handed users (insert Figures 1 and 2) and can include both components or only the steering mechanism. The body of work to date, comparing the NUW to existing provision, suggests that the NUW is ergonomically more efficient to drive and preferred by users in a laboratory setting [11, 12], in their own homes [12, 13], and in simulated activities of daily living setting [14]. These studies suggested that NUW could meet the unmet needs of the hemiplegic user group and provide them with additional choice in their wheelchair provision.…”
