Comparison of ABTS, DPPH, Phosphomolybdenum Assays for Estimating Antioxidant Activity and Phenolic Compounds in Five Different Plant Extracts

Abstract: Many plants and their constituents (carotenoids, flavonoids and other phenolic compounds), action to inhibit the free radical by the use of antioxidant activity, helping to a better efficiency of nutrients utilization. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antioxidant activity and phenolic content of five different plants, known for their antioxidant potential. Total phenols were determined by FolinCiocalteumethod, with few modifications. The antioxidant capacity was evaluated by DPPH, ABTS radical-… Show more

“…The total phenol content of HWE powder was measured spectrophotometrically according to the Folin-Ciocalteu method, as described by Untea et al (2018). The principle is to record the absorbance of a basic extract which, by complexation with the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, absorbs in Vis domain at λ = 732 nm, wavelength.…”

“…The free radical cation scavenging ability protocol (ABTS+) 2,2ʹ‐azino‐bis(3‐ethylbenzothiazoline‐6‐sulphonic acid) was performed using the standard procedure(UNTEA et al., 2018). The stock solution was developed by reacting ABTS aqueous solution (7 mM) with 2,45 mM aqueous potassium persulfate solution in equal proportions, permitting them to react at room temperature in the dark for 12–16 hr.…”

“…The nanoparticles and aqueous resin extract samples were then added with the solution ABTS and incubated for 30 min. The absorbance was estimated at 734 nm wavelength and the same protocol for ascorbic acid was replicated as a standard (Sridhar & Charles, 2019; UNTEA et al., 2018).…”

“…The methanolic extract of plants and phytogenic mixture (n=6) were used to analyse the total polyphenols (TP) and total antioxidant capacity, following the methods described by Untea et al, (2018). The antioxidant capacity was assessed by two different assays (ABTS and DPPH).…”
