“…This medium was used with effect by Schmale and others (1969). Reyn and Bentzon (1972) found a similar combination to be most useful for rectal specimens-despite the fact that 8 per cent. of their plates were overgrown.…”

“…The specimens were transported in Stuart's medium to the State Serum Institute, Copenhagen, for final culture and identification. Cultures were made on a Thayer-Martin medium (Reyn and Bentzon 1972), and the final identification was made by immunofluorescence (Lind, 1975 (Kvorning, 1971). Therefore a routine examination for gonorrhoea should be performed in women who have a high risk of exposure to infection and who would not otherwise be diagnosed and treated.…”

“…This practice has been accompanied by an increasing prevalence of N. gonorrhoeae strains that do not grow on such media (15,28) compared with the prevalence of hypersusceptible strains before vancomycin came into use (5,21). One possible effect of hypersusceptibility to vancomycin is to reduce the probability that gonorrhea caused by these strains will be treated.…”

“…Revertants to Env' gain the resistance encoded by mtr. Differences in susceptibility to vancomycin were found in recent isolates of N. gonorrhoeae, and hypersusceptibility is recognized now as a potential source of difficulty in the laboratory diagnosis of gonorrhea (21,27). Because typical gonococcal strains are resistant to vancomycin at concentrations of .3.0 ,ug/ml (5), selective culture media containing vancomycin and several other antibacterial drugs are used in many laboratories as an aid in isolating N. gonorrhoeae strains from patients' specimens contaminated with various commensal bacteria.…”
