Comparison of 4 methods for quantifying posterior capsule opacification

Abstract: The objective AQUA score correlated well with subjective methods including the EPCO system. The POCO system, which assesses PCO area, did not adequately describe PCO intensity and includes a subjective step in the analysis process. The AQUA system could become an important tool for randomized masked trials of PCO inhibition.

“…The principle of this slitlamp photographic technique and the AQUA software used for analyzing the amount of regeneratory PCO have been described. 11 The quantification of ACO and fibrotic PCO intensity was performed subjectively at the slitlamp on a scale of 0 to 4 (0 Z clear anterior capsule; 4 Z dense white anterior capsule).…”

“…Thus, several methods have been developed to evaluate PCO quantitatively. [3][4][5][6][7][8] In diabetic patients, it is important to maintain a clear posterior capsule, not only for good visual acuity but also for fundus visualization, which may be needed for retinal photocoagulation treatment or even vitreous surgery. Many surgeons have a clinical impression that PCO after cataract surgery is more extensive in diabetic patients than in nondiabetic patients.…”

“…However, the photographs taken every 30 days were sufficiently reliable to compare the slow evolution of the few PCOs that developed. Subjective methods of grading PCO scores in humans have been compared to quantitative methods and have been found to be a reliable method of measuring PCO (FINDL et al, 2003).…”
