Comparison of 4,4′-Dimethylbiphenyl from Biomass-Derived Furfural and Oil-Based Resource: Technoeconomic Analysis and Life-Cycle Assessment

Abstract: Replacing oil-based toluene with biomass-derived furfural for 4,4′dimethylbiphenyl (DMBP) production can pave the way for sustainable polyester manufacture. This work compared the economic and environmental performances of two conceptual designs of 4,4′-DMBP production. The first toluene-based route consists of toluene alkylation to (methylcyclohexyl)toluene (MCHT), MCHT dehydrogenation to DMBP, and isomerization of lower-valued 3,3′-DMBP. The renewable furfural-based route includes hydrogenation of furfural t… Show more

“…Moreover, HMF and furfural could further go through hydro-deoxygenation, acylation, and cyclo-addition processes to synthesize a variety of value-added products, including butadiene, jet fuel, surfactant, lubricant, and p -xylene. , It is noteworthy that this superstructure does not contain all potential biomass conversion routes. Many other HMF and furfural conversion technologies could be considered in this framework when the necessary input-output relationship, cost, and emission data are compiled. …”

“…14,15 Therefore, it is highly desirable to extend the carbon chain of biomassderived platform molecules to synthesize bio-fuels with similar properties to conventional gasoline and diesel. 16,17 Many strategies, such as aldol condensation, 18,19 Diels-Alder reaction, 20,21 Knoevenagel condensation 22,23 and hydroxyalkylation/alkylation 24,25 have been developed for elongating the carbon chain of bio-based platform molecules. In particular, aldol condensation is the most frequently used approach for the synthesis of high-quality fuels from bio-based molecules because aldol condensation is facilitated by acidic or basic sites under relatively mild conditions.…”
